LEBANON - State Police say a Vermont man walked into the home of distant relatives who live on West Lebanon Road and stabbed three family members late Christmas night.

Alton Britch, 44, of Wheelock, Vt., was charged with elevated aggravated assault and is being held on $100,000 bail pending his arraignment Monday in Springvale District Court.

The incident began shortly before 9:50 a.m. at 188 West Lebanon Road when Britch walked through the door and stabbed three family members, inflicting what were believed to be nonlife-threatening injuries, said State Trooper James MacDonald today.

A neighbor who watched the scene unfold said they saw all victims enter ambulances under their own power.

MacDonald said that family members said they had no idea why Britch had stopped by and that it had been more than two years since they had seen him.

According to a State Police press release, Britch showed up at the home of his cousin, 58-year-old Beverly Duquette.

When he entered the house he confronted and stabbed Duquette's grandson, 18-year old Dominic Small, three times in the back. Also injured were Duquette's husband, Randall Duquette, 54, and her daughter, 39-year-old Anna Malinowski.

During a struggle that ensued Britch was hit over the head with a frying pay, police said. He was being held down at the house by the victims when troopers arrived.

The knife was recovered at the scene.

The neighbor, who didn't want to have his name used, said he saw police interviewing a man who "seemed to be out of it" out on the street for several minutes.

"He didn't seem coherent," the neighbor said.

MacDonald said the investigation was ongoing.

One of the neighbors said they saw at least a half dozen State Trooper Police cruisers as well as Berwick Police.

Both Lebanon and Milton ambulances responded to the scene and transported the three to Frisbie Memorial Hospital.
