SPRINGVALE, Maine - Safety officials said today it was a 64-year-old Sanford man who drowned in the Mousam River on Thursday.

Sanford Police responded around 2:25 p.m. to the Springvale recreation area where witnesses stated a male had been swimming in the river when he became distressed and called out for help.

Bystanders were able to pull the man from the water and the lifeguard on duty began CPR, police said.

Sanford Fire Department personnel continued to attempt to resuscitate the man but were unable to revive him, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim was identified as Michael Lancaster.

Lancaster was reportedly not far from the park but not in an area that is overseen by lifeguards.
