MILTON - The Milton Conservation Commission is seeking volunteers to help with a work/cleanup day on the 79-acre town-owned Casey Road property that the MCC is working with Moose Mountains Regional Greenways to conserve.
The work day is scheduled for 9 a.m.-noon on Aug. 25. After a brief update on the status of the conservation project, volunteers will sort and remove leftover construction debris and trash so the land is safe and clean for recreation and educational uses by residents and school children.
Last fall, three old structures on the property were burned with the help of Milton Fire Department volunteers, in order to avoid any safety problems. The remains of those buildings, including some metal roofing, concrete blocks and a wooden platform, still need to be removed. Other items such as old tires and some general litter needs to be picked up as well.
Milton resident Karen Golab is Chair of the Casey Road Land Protection Committee, a subcommittee of the MCC, on which she serves. According to Golab, getting the property cleaned up is a priority for the sub-committee.
"This property has 1 1/2 miles of trails through beautiful woods and down to Lyman Brook, which flows along one boundary. We want townspeople to be able to enjoy taking walks on these trails and we want our schools to be able to use the land as an outdoor classroom. With enough help, we should be able to get it cleaned up in half a day and ready for the public to use."
Volunteers are asked to park along the right side of Casey Road and to be respectful of the local residents by driving slowly and not blocking or turning around in driveways. Advance registrations are not needed. Work gloves, garbage bags and a water bottle could be helpful; water refills will be available. Pet owners are asked to leave pets at home on this occasion.
