Wolfeboro artist delves delightfully in mosaic of mediums

The Franklin Gallery at RiverStones Custom Framing will host an Artist's Reception for the current exhibit on Thursday from 5:30-7 p.m. The public is invited to come and see the exhibit and meet the artist. Light refreshments will be served. Titled Remembered, this exhibit features the work of Wolfeboro artist Valerie Schurer Christle.

Christle is a self-taught artist who strongly believes in following her instincts as far as creativity is concerned. She allows subject matter to be translated in different forms. She works in a variety of mediums. Her artwork ranges from fabric wall hangings to miniature stained glass abstractions, collage combined with found objects, acrylic land and seascapes, some with poetry worked in to the image, magical gardens created from a combination of fabric with antique button flowers as well as assemblages under glass domes.

There is something for all tastes, traditional and otherwise.

"Occasionally I will make the same theme in different forms," says Christle. "Such a theme is represented in this exhibit - 'Touching Bowls' are represented both as acrylic paintings and as a detailed appliquéd fabric piece."

Born in Richmond, Surrey, England, Christle experienced the '60s in London. Over the years she followed many paths, working in the fashion arena, working on a kibbutz in Israel, managing a pub in Notting Hill gate and working as a certified dental surgeon's assistant.

During all this time, she created art in various forms. Her patchwork cushions appeared in Harper's & Queen, and The Ideal Home magazines in the 1970s, and her photography and collage works were included in two books, Six Inches to England and Make a Hole in the Fence.

After marrying and moving to America in 1979, her time was focused on raising her two daughters. Since retiring as a framing/art consultant, Valerie has focused on producing her artwork at her studio in Wolfeboro.

Christle's artwork can also be seen at The Art Place, Main Street, Wolfeboro and The Kalled Gallery, The Market Place, Wolfeboro.
