ROCHESTER - Police are investigating a single-vehicle crash Friday night on Rochester Hill Road that left the lone occupant of the car with serious injuries.

The accident occurred around 11 p.m. when police say the vehicle left the roadway and struck a utility pole.

The caller who reported the accident to police dispatch said there was smoke coming from the car, and the pole was sparking.

Arriving personnel found the Nissan Sentra facing south and into a utility pole with a female driver inside.

Police say a preliminary investigation revealed that the crash occurred when Ashley Privett, 25, of Green Street in Somersworth was traveling on Rochester Hill Road and her Sentra struck the utility pole.

Privett was transported to Frisbie Memorial Hospital with what were described as serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Both the pole and the vehicle sustained heavy damage.

Rochester Hill Road was shut down between Profile Apartments and Sky Haven Airport due to the damage to the pole. The closure lasted several hours while utility crews repaired the pole during which time there was a temporary loss of power.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation
