Woman who drove car onto ballfield killing man placed in mental hospital

Carol Sharrow (Police mugshot)

ALFRED, Maine - The woman who drove onto a Sanford ballfield last June killing a man will be committed to a mental hospital, a judge ruled on Tuesday in York County Superior Court.

Carol Sharrow, 52, of Sanford, was found not criminally responsible for her actions and placed in Riverview Psychiatric Hospital in Augusta.

The incident occurred around 7:10 p.m. on June 1 when Sharrow drove her car onto the Goodall Park field during a Sanford youth baseball game.
The vehicle entered the park through the main gate and drove around the field, forcing bystanders and ballplayers to scatter to avoid the vehicle as it drove erratically.
The vehicle then struck a closed gate before speeding toward an open main gate striking Douglas Parkhurst, 68, of West Newfield, who died en route to the hospital. Parkhurst was trying to close the gate prior to being struck.
