A win for Rochester veterans: Fincom OKs ordinance that maintains tax credit levels

ROCHESTER - Rochester veterans need not worry about any decrease in their real estate tax credits if an ordinance passed unanimously by the city's finance committee gets a nod from the full City Council at its March 3 meeting.

Chief Assessor Marybeth Walker told the fincom that laws related to Veteran Credits changed last July, including one that if a person qualifies for both the Veteran Tax Credit under RSA 72:28 in the amount of $400 and the Vet Credit under RSA 72:35 in the amount of $2,000 they will no longer be able to receive both credits.

She said that about 170 veterans in Rochester were receiving both tax credits, including the disabled veteran credit and the veteran credit. but that last year's change began disallowing "stacking" of credits.

The end result is that all those that were getting a credit of $2,400 would see a reduction of $400 unless a change was made by the city.
