SOMERSWORTH - Aclara Technologies employees who work at the former GE plant in downtown Somersworth learned on Thursday that the plant would be shutting down in the coming year.

Aclara said it was looking for a new place to manufacture some of their newer electric meters.

"This new location will be home to approximately 100 employees currently based in the Somersworth facility and will be focused on engineering, research and development," the company said in a statement.

All of the current production work at the mammoth Somersworth plant that used to employ up to 2,000 will be shifted to other subcontractors.

GE had been a behemoth fixture of the Somersworth landscape for nearly 70 years, but in 2015, fewer than 500 workers were employed there.

The number employed there currently was not immediately available.
