Acton man arrested in Legion embezzlement case

John Butler

ACTON, Maine - The treasurer of an area American Legion Post has been arrested for allegedly embezzling Post funds for his own personal use.

John Butler, 69, of Acton, was arrested on Monday and charged with theft by unauthorized taking, a felony that could land him up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.

Butler stole about $1,900 from American Legion Post #55 in Limerick over a three-month period, according to the York County Sheriff's Office. Police were called after members of the club suspected improprieties with the Post's finances over the past year.

Butler is scheduled for an arraignment in Alfred Superior Court in February.
