PORTSMOUTH — Temple Israel of Portsmouth on Sunday announced the appointment of Rabbi Marc Hersch as its next spiritual leader, effective July 1.
Rabbi Hersch joins Temple Israel following his ordination from The Jewish Theological Seminary of America (JTS) in New York City, a premier institution of Jewish education. An educator, pastoral caregiver, and community builder, Rabbi Hersch brings experience serving congregations, students, and families across the country.
"We are elated to welcome Rabbi Hersch to Temple Israel and the Seacoast community" said Ian Kaner, President of Temple Israel. "Finding a way to keep Judaism relevant at a time when people turn away from religious or social support is a challenge. Rabbi Hersch has demonstrated a deep commitment to relationship building and Jewish connection. We are utterly thrilled for the future of our congregation under his leadership."
Most recently, Rabbi Hersch served as Rabbinic Intern at United Synagogue of Hoboken, N.J., where he taught learners of all ages, led programming for young professionals, and guided individuals through the conversion process. His rabbinic training also included service to congregations in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Georgia, and Texas, providing him with experience working with diverse Jewish communities.
In addition to congregational leadership, Rabbi Hersch completed Clinical Pastoral Education in New York City, providing spiritual care and support to patients and families in a hospital setting. He has also mentored student leaders through Columbia/Barnard Hillel and Camp Ramah in Georgia.
Prior to entering the rabbinate, Rabbi Hersch worked as a special education teacher in Chicago through Teach For America. He then earned dual bachelor's degrees from Columbia University and The Jewish Theological Seminary through their Joint Program, studying history and Talmud.
"As a self-described 'Big Tent' congregation,” said Rabbi Hersch, “Temple Israel struck me as a place to build deep relationships with so many. My focus now is on meeting all members of our congregation and the greater Seacoast community. Together, we can build a community that is supportive, inclusive, and spiritually meaningful.”
Temple Israel conducted a comprehensive national search to identify its next rabbi. Search Committee Co-Chairs Amy Hyett and Susan Grodman led a months-long process that included congregational listening sessions, candidate interviews, community engagement opportunities, and extensive evaluation by lay leaders. "We interviewed a diverse group of candidates during this process," Grodman said. "Rabbi Marc’s energy, spirituality, intelligence, and ability to connect with all types of people really stood out. We are all so excited to have him join our synagogue and the Seacoast community!”
Temple Israel serves one of the largest and most active Jewish communities in New Hampshire and southern Maine. Founded in 1910, Temple Israel Portsmouth is a diverse and vibrant Jewish congregation serving the greater Seacoast region. The congregation offers religious services, educational programming, cultural events, social action initiatives, and opportunities for lifelong Jewish learning.
Rabbi Hersch will begin his tenure on July 1, and will participate in a series of community events and engagements for congregants and community members to meet him throughout the summer.
