A well built smashburger set the tone for a smashing lunch at Cozy's Dockside on Southport

SOUTHPORT, Maine - Cozy’s Dockside located in Cozy Harbor is one of just two standalone restaurants on Southport island, but it was the most memorable dining experiences of a recent trip to Midcoast Maine.

The restaurant is located in the same spot as a former harborside eatery that boasted two candlepin bowling lanes where pinboys set up the pins, not machines a half century ago.

Much of the same charm is felt from the wait staff at Cozy’s Dockside, where we dined for lunch.

Of course nothing stokes an appetite like a hike on an island along the coast with the brisk, salt air to fill your lungs.

I ordered a smashburger with bleu cheese, homemade chips and a dish of creamy, not too tart, not too sweet cole slaw that was a hugely delicious side for $3,

No bun needed. The chips were all the carbs I wanted.

The five-ounce smashburger was superb and the bleu cheese of high quality, and the fixins like the thick slices of tomatoes you see in the photo were unmatched with many eateries.

I rarely get dessert but this time a dish of moose tracks sounded good after the meal and what a bargain it was. Three bucks for a huge cup.

This place is a Midcoast gem, and I wasn’t surprised at all when the tables inside and out were completely full a half hour after its 11:30 a.m. opening.

If you’re going for lunch get there early, cause they don’t take reservations and who wants to wait in line!
