ROCHESTER - Thomas Irwin Mann, whose name sparks memories of generosity and faith, died peacefully in his sleep on the morning of February 24, 2024.
He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Constance Mann, his three children, Deborah Abel, Steven
Mann, and David Mann, and his brother Robert Mann. He also leaves behind seven beloved grandchildren: Kyle Abel, Christa Roy, Kelsey Abel, Heather Summers, Nathan Mann, Sarah Blais, and Rachel Mann, and one great grandchild: Adalyn Summers.
As a call firefighter and captain on Engine 2, he was well known in Rochester for his compassion and perseverance. Thomas was a member of Emmanuel Advent Christian Church and served as an elder for many years. His servant leadership compelled him to be among the first to provide support to those suffering. He reached out to those who were alone, visited the ill in hospitals, and shared prayers that brought solace and peace. Despite his frugal lifestyle, Tom always carried $100 in his pocket prepared to offer it to anyone in need. When once asked about his generosity he quietly replied, "It's not mine to keep. It's God's for me to give away."
Thomas would joke that he was born on "Friday the 13th". However, February
13th, 1935, fell on a Wednesday, representative of the humor he embraced throughout life beneath an occasionally abrasive exterior. His bold yet gentle presence blessed the earth for 89 full years, and all who met Tom would learn of his deep faith as he trusted God through every challenge and praised Him for each victory. Naturally, he would depart from us on 2/24/2024. Twenty-four is depicted throughout scripture as a
number of wholeness, physically and spiritually. Though many were not ready for Thomas to leave, his work was complete, and he was called home.
