HAMPTON - The New Hampshire Department of Transportation invites the public to a special viewing of three short documentary videos highlighting the history, engineering, and significance of New Hampshire's historic bascule bridges.
The event will be held on Aug. 18 at 6 p.m. at the Hampton Academy Auditorium, 29 Academy Avenue, Hampton.
The videos were produced as part of the mitigation efforts associated with the replacement of the 1949 Neil R. Underwood Memorial Bridge. Together, they tell the story of New Hampshire's movable bridges and their important role in the state's transportation and maritime history.
The three short documentary videos explore the history, engineering, and significance of New Hampshire's historic bascule bridges. Through the stories of the Neil R. Underwood Memorial Bridge, the NH Route 1B Bridge over Little Harbor, and the Alexander Scammell Bridge, viewers will learn how these unique movable bridges operate, their role in the Seacoast's maritime and transportation history, and the lasting impact of the Neil R. Underwood Memorial Bridge on the communities of Hampton and Seabrook.
Following the viewing, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a question-and-answer session moderated by Walter Wheeler, Senior Architectural Historian at Hartgen Archeological Associates.
