ROCHESTER - Nearly six weeks after a woman was shot to death on South Main Street there are still no arrests or suspects in the case, however the assistant attorney general heading the investigation said there is some cause for optimism.
"Progress is being made," Assistant Attorney General Peter Hinckley said today.
Billy Jo Ahearn, 24, died early June 6 after being shot around midnight near Friendly's restaurant.
The incident unfolded as officers responded to the area for a reported shooting incident that apparently involved two groups of people.
Upon arrival, officers discovered three adults, including Ahearn who had sustained a gunshot wound.
Police overnight and for several days after combed the neighborhood searching the grounds as well as trash receptacles for the weapon used. The also searched a home at 50 Lafayette St. and the Cocheco River behind the courthouse.
Hinckley declined to comment on any other aspects of the case, including how many interviews had been conducted or how many people police think may be involved.
Several residents of the neighborhood have told The Rochester Voice the confrontation arose from a drug deal gone awry.
