CONCORD - The Attorney Generals Office is warning residents about a surge in scam text messages falsely claiming to be from New Hampshire Courts.
The New Hampshire Department of Justice Consumer Protection and Antitrust Bureau has received numerous reports from consumers who have received text messages alleging that they have missed a court date or owe a fine. The messages often include what appears to be an official "notice of hearing" and direct recipients to click a link or submit payment to avoid further legal consequences.
These messages are fraudulent.
The New Hampshire Judicial Branch does not notify individuals of court hearings or fines via unsolicited text messages, nor does it request payment through links sent by text.
Consumers should be cautious of messages that:
- Claim to be from a court or government agency and demand immediate payment
- Include links to unfamiliar or suspicious websites
- Threaten arrest, license suspension, or additional penalties for nonpayment
- Contain generic greetings or lack specific, verifiable case information
If you receive one of these messages:
- Do not click on any links or provide personal or financial information
- Do not send payment
- Delete the message
Scammers often use official-looking language and documents to create a sense of urgency and fear. Consumers should take time to verify any unexpected communication before taking action.
