City's May Street will switch to one-way traffic

ROCHESTER - May Street, which travels from Columbus Avenue (Route 125) to Charles Street, will become a one-way street on April 16.

The move is being made to help traffic flow in the area, especially at the intersection of Columbus Avenue, Upham Street and Charles Street, Michael Bezanson, interim director of Rochester's Department of Public Works, said today.

Congestion has increased due to an ongoing city infrastructure program making improvements on water, sewer and drainage, Bezanson said.

May Street, which is only about 400 feet in length will be one-way from Columbus Avenue to Charles Street.

The change will be a permanent change, and Bezanson said there will be plenty of signage and perhaps a police presence during the mid-month transition to one way.
