Condition of city man hurt in Rt. 16 rollover improves

PORTLAND, Maine - The condition of a Rochester man seriously injured Friday night in a rollover crash on the Spaulding Turnpike has been upgraded to serious, a Maine hospital spokesperson said today.

Lawrence Douglas, 37, the driver, sustained life-threatening injuries and was Medflighted to Maine Medical Center in Portland soon after the crash which occurred around 8:35 p.m.

He had remained in critical condition over the weekend until today.

A passenger in the car, 54-year-old James Gosselin of Rochester, died at the scene.

Police say the accident occurred when Douglas' Subaru Forester
appears to have been traveling southbound when it lost control, struck the center concrete barrier, traveled off the right side of the roadway and rolled over several times in the area of Exit 15.
At this time it appears that speed may have been a factor in this crash, however all aspects remain under investigation.
