DCYF intervention in Rochester goes terribly wrong

ROCHESTER - What was supposed to be a peaceful transition of a three-year-old to DCYF custody became anything but on Tuesday when the mother punched an officer in the face and grabbed a DCYF employee, all while refusing to give up her child.

Rochester Police Capt. Jason Thomas said today there was a plan in place for DCYF to take ex-parte possession of the child, but leave her with other family members as long as Cassandra L. Morton, 35, the mother, left the premises.

But when DCYF and an officer arrived at the Cross Wind Lane address, police found evidence of drug use, which prevented the child from being left there.

That's when Morton, who was holding the child, ran off to another part of the house before police caught up with her, Thomas said.

During a brief struggle, Morton allegedly punched an officer and grabbed a DCYF representative, both resulting in Class A simple assault misdemeanors.

She was also charged with possession of marijuana, resisting arrest, obstruction of government administration and endangering the welfare of a child for running in the house while holding her child.

Morton is being held on $2,500 cash bail pending an arraignment later today in Rochester District Court.
