ROCHESTER, N.H. - Dorothy (Bunker) May, 91, died Monday, February 27, 2017, after a long and fascinating life.
She was born and raised in Wakefield, Mass., the oldest child of Harrison and Martha (Butler) Bunker. She had four siblings, none of whom survived her.
She was married to Robert C. May, a career U.S. Navy officer, from 1945 until his death in 2003. As a Navy wife, she relocated often, establishing new homes for her family in many different places, including Bremerton, Wash., Norfolk, Va., Key West, Fla., Monterey, Calif., Honolulu, Hawaii, Long Beach, Calif., Newport, R.I., Washington, D.C., and San Diego, Calif. She had lived in Rochester, N.H., since 1989.
Dorothy was an avid reader, a skilled watercolor artist, a dedicated gardener, and a master of Ikebana (Japanese flower arranging). She was also self-proclaimed "cat lady", concerned for the plight of stray and feral cats. She shared her home with cats her whole life, and now leaves Blackness to be cared for by her family.
More than anything, she was a loving, supportive mother, and a lovely gracious lady.
She is survived by her four children, a daughter Laurel Anne May Zeri and husband Kenneth of Kaneohe, Hawaii; and three sons, Robert C. May, Jr., and wife Marlene of Rochester, John Allen May and wife Mary of Carlsbad, Calif., and David Eugene May and husband Phil Cash of Seattle, Wash.; as well as six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her oldest friend from childhood, Hannelore Spence, of Laconia, N.H.
