WASHINGTON - Amtrak announced on Thursday it will allow Downeaster passengers to bring their pets along for the ride.

Beginning Oct. 12 a cat or small dog can be brought aboard, but they must be in a crate and the crate cannot weigh more 20 pounds.

Pet owners will have to pay an extra $25 to make a reservation.

The service is also available on several other Northeast routes, including Boston to Lynchburg, Newport News, and Norfolk, Va.
