Dr. Peter Markos ... competed on UNH's 1st swim team

DOVER - Dr. Peter Markos D.O., 71, of Renaud Avenue died on December 6, 2020.

Peter was born on July 9, 1949 the son of Dr. Simon Markos, dentist and former mayor of Dover, and Roberta (Boothby) Markos. He graduated from Dover High School in 1967.

Peter earned a B.S in Chemistry from the University of New Hampshire in 1971 and a M.S. in Chemical Physics from the University of Southern California. He earned a Doctorate of Osteopathic Medicine in 1982, University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine's first graduating class. He became the first D.O. resident at the Boston University Hospital and worked for the U.S. Public Health Service in Rosebud, SD. and Alpine, CA.

Some of Peter's fondest memories were formed coaching the Oyster River Otters, swimming on UNH's first men's team where he was later an assistant coach, assistant coaching USC's swim team, as a physician for USA Swimming's National team, as an American Red Cross Water Safety instructor at Camp Tevya in Brookline, and parenting his beloved daughter.

Peter is survived by his daughter Haley Markos, of Portland, ME, his sisters Nikki Drake of Williamsburg, VA and Aletheia (Theia)Fischer of Merrimack, his niece Laura A. Lukan of Dyersville, Iowa, and Haley's mother and his long-term partner of 28 yrs, Debra Learmonth of Dover.
