FARMINGDALE, Maine - A motorist on the Maine Turnpike was killed on Saturday when his vehicle was rear-ended in an area that had reduced speeds due to an earlier accident.
According to a press release from the Maine Dept. of Safety, Maine State Police responded to the fatal crash at mile marker 105 in Farmingdale around 11:30 a.m.
The initial investigation revealed that the fatal crash was a secondary crash caused by traffic slowing in the area. Police say the driver of a BMW sedan was traveling on the turnpike when he was rear-ended around mile marker 105, pinning his vehicle between two others. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. A female passenger in the BMW was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Names of those involved are not being released at this time pending notification of next of kin.
The initial crash that caused traffic to slow traffic occurred around 11:10 at mile marker 106 northbound. That crash involved several cars with multiple people taken to the hospital. Both crashes remain under investigation.
