ROCHESTER - An elderly Rochester man on a mobility scooter was injured today when he collided with an SUV on North Main Street.

The crash occurred around 12:15 p.m. in the area of Fortier Drive when police say Edwin Lowell, 91, was operating his electric three-wheeled mobility scooter on North Main Street when he was struck by a northbound 1998 Toyota Rav-4 driven by Donna Barden, 57, of Rochester.

Lowell's scooter came to rest in the southbound lane of travel after the collision. He was taken by ambulance to the Frisbie Memorial Hospital Emergency Department with what were described as nonlife threatening injuries. Barden is cooperating with the investigation.

Police say although Lowell was within a crosswalk at the time of the collision, the case is still being investigated as it is unclear if Lowell crossed into traffic from the sidewalk before ensuring it was safe to do so and whether Barden had sufficient time to react.
