FARMINGTON - Farmington's schools superintendent canceled classes for today after an employee's child was found to have tested positive for the coronavirus.

"According to DHHS protocols shared with superintendents and reiterated in our conversation with the Commissioner this afternoon, the exposure risk to Farmington staff and students is low," Ruth Ellen Vaughn said in a Facebook post around 10 p.m. on Thursday. "My decision to close the district is from an abundance of caution only."

With classes canceled maintenance staff will be giving all facilities a thorough cleaning, Vaughn added in one of two school-related posts sent out.

Any and all school activities planned for the weekend will also be canceled.

The departments of Health and Human Services and Education will both be further consulted over the weekend, but as of now, she expects the schools to be back up and running on Tuesday.

Students have Monday off due to a scheduled professional development day.
