MILTON - The state Department of Transportation has attached flashing yellow lights to the stop signs at the end of affected off ramps at the Exit 17 interchange after two accidents occurred in the area of the overpass construction site in the past week.

From 9 a.m. till workers are done for the day neither lane on Route 16 is open, forcing all motorists to get off the highway, cross Route 75 and then get back onto another onramp to continue their journey.

Selectmen on Tuesday had discussed asking the DOT to put in stoplights, but this is what was decided, Milton Police Chief Richard Krauss said today.

Krauss added that if all construction progress goes as planned, he understands that the project should be completed by the end of this week.

One Milton man escaped injury early Tuesday when his pickup truck was T-boned by another vehicle that went through the stop sign and struck his truck, causing it to roll two times.

"To walk away from a crash like that is pretty lucky," Krauss said.

After construction crews are done for the night, Krauss said the highway is back to two lanes, but there is no shoulder in the immediate area.
