Frisbie acquisition by HCA is good medicine for city of Rochester

The Charitable Trusts Unit of the Attorney General's Office expects to have a decision on whether to allow the acquisition of Frisbie Memorial Hospital by HCA of America a month from today.

We hope they decide in favor of the buyout. Frisbie sorely needs the skills and logistics that HCA has to offer, not to mention the financial stability that HCA offers Rochester's longtime hospital and those it serves.

At a public hearing earlier this month HCA officials made known their full commitment to improving Frisbie's efficiencies, including carving out additional medical niches that could make the hospital more profitable and sustainable like Portsmouth Regional Hospital, which is also owned by HCA.

HCA also agreed that Frisbie's outstanding patient satisfaction numbers were something that could be emulated by other HCA hospitals.

One thing is certain. Rochester citizens do not want to let happen to them what happened to Sanford, which lost its hospital several years ago.

"This acquisition is going to happen," opined one individual close to the proposed merger who didn't want to be identified.

Another agreed, adding it has none of the issues currently holding up the twin acquisitions by Mass General of Wentworth Douglass and Exeter hospitals.

We hope the Charitable Trusts Unit and any overseeing courts will see the dire situation facing Rochester's hospital and give this acquisition their full and speedy blessing.
