DOVER - A Gonic man is facing up to seven years in state prison in the beating of his cat.

Charles Loeffler, 42, of 479 Gonic Road, was indicted by a grand jury on a single count of cruelty to animals, a Class B felony that carries a three and a half to seven year prison stint.

According to the indictment, Loeffler "purposefully beat a male feline named 'Buddy.'"

The incident is said to have occurred on March 5 of last year.

Buddy was removed from the home, received medical care and is now living with a loving family, Strafford County District Attorney Tom Velardi said today.

The grand jury indictments were handed down on June 17 and released last week.

An indictment is not an indication of guilt, rather that enough evidence has been gathered to warrant moving forward to trial.
