We here at The Lebanon Voice see many mistakes in the obituaries of that Dover paper. We suspect it is because obits are now considered advertisement in their mindset, and so they don’t copy edit them like they used to at least attempt to do.

Lots of silly mistakes.

But when they’re in a family’s loved one’s obituary, their final notice of corporeal existence and passing, we don’t think they’re silly at all.

We think it’s egregious. There was one obit this week that listed someone’s birth date as earlier this year and their date of death as back in the 1920s.

Seriously?!

The obit was riddled with other mistakes: missing letters, sentences that didn’t make sense.

We don’t make it a practice to disparage other papers for their mistakes. There’s that old saying after all, “There but for the grace of God go I.”

But we do publicly disparage them for charging $140 for an obit, when until just a few years ago, they were free.

And then on top of that, it’s riddled with errors.

Really?!

Just for the record, The Lebanon Voice publishes obits from Rochester, Milton and Lebanon for free. Just let the funeral home know.

The Lebanon Voice does charge a $25 fee if the calling hours, donations and funeral arrangements are listed as these normally also include the funeral home’s name and have always been considered advertised copy.
