How often do you leave a restaurant raving about their sides?
Not often, but we were doing just that after leaving Johnson's Seafood and Steak of New Durham earlier this week.
The restaurant is taking full precautions regarding COVID guidelines, but they have greatly added to their seating capacity by erecting a large tent just west of their restaurant.
The tent is closed on the west side, which is a good thing, as a helicopter touched down with a luncheon customer while we were there.
Our waitress, who was spectacular, said the chopper touches down once or twice a week.
So we had a sideshow with two spectacular sides: their french fries and their squash. Sometimes of the vegetable sides are swapped out occasionally, but the squash is a yearround constant.
"People won't let it go," she said.
And the secret to such delicious squash?
"Butter and brown sugar," she said. We demurre; there must be more to it.
At any rate, there was none left for the doggie bag.
Along with the delicious hand cut fries and squash, Martha enjoyed a heaping helping of hand-breaded clam strips ($12), which she said came in a light and airy coating that had them nice and crispy on the outside.
I left my chicken dish comfort zone and got the quarter rack of baby back ribs cooked in beer (the gluten cooks out), with gluten free french fries; and cole slaw, which was freshly made and midway between tart and sweet the way I like it.
