DOVER - A jury today found a Lebanon man guilty in the felonious sexual assault of a young Barrington girl who testified against him at trial.
The verdict means that David A Shaw, 48, of Lower Guinea Road, Lebanon, Maine, could spend up to life in prison for sexually assaulting the girl who was around 8 when the abuse occurred at her Barrington home where Shaw was living with her mom and the victim's younger sister.
Shaw remained stonefaced as the jury read the verdicts that convicted him of three of four counts against him, but minutes later he softly wept as one of his defense lawyers went and got him some water to drink.
After a brief conversation about a presentencing hearing, Strafford County Superior Court Judge Steven Houran told Shaw "bail is not an option" and he was remanded over to sheriff's deputies for the short ride to Strafford County Jail where he will stay until his sentence is handed down.
Shaw was found guilty on three counts of felonious sexual assault, for performing oral sex on the girl, having her perform oral sex on him and sexual touching for having her touch his penis.
The lone count he was found innocent on was one that said he'd had oral sex performed on him a second time.
The four-day trial had few witnesses, however Shaw unexpectedly took the stand in his own defense on Tuesday just prior to closing arguments.
The incidents all occurred in a bunkbed in the victim's bedroom at their Barrington home between August 2015 and August 2016.
Defense lawyers had no comment as they quickly left the courthouse after the verdict.
Assistant Strafford County Attorney Tim Sullivan, who prosecuted the case, was not immediately available.
