Fun and learning for kids are the focus of a free paddling event on the second basin of Great East Lake in Acton, Maine, July 20, from 9 a.m.-noon (rain date: July 21).

Kayaking with Kids is a new activity sponsored by the Acton-Wakefield Watersheds Alliance, Moose Mountains Regional Greenways and Three Rivers Land Trust, all non-profits working to protect the water quality and natural resources and conserve the special places of our region.

While paddling on the lake, kids will have a chance to use Discovery Scopes provided by AWWA to get a close look at the small creatures that live in the water and to play wildlife bingo. Parents are welcome to accompany their children. Attendees are asked to bring kayaks or canoes and have some paddling experience. Everyone must wear a US Coast Guard approved personal flotation device. A few kayaks and PFDs are available for loan.

The event is free but spaces are limited to 20 kids, 10 or older, with one adult present for every four children. To preregister, call MMRG Education Coordinator Kari Lygren at 603-978-7125 or email info@mmrg.info.
