DOVER - A Lebanon man faces up to 30 years in state prison after his indictment in the possession and trafficking of the prescription drug, Alprazolam, commonly referred to as Xanax.

Nicholas Poirier, 21, with a last known address of 149 Smith Road, Lebanon, Maine, is charged with one count of possession with intent to distribute and one count of possession.

The trafficking charge indictment says that on Dec. 2 in Somersworth Poirier "did knowingly and unlawfully possess or have under his control the Schedule IV controlled drug Alprazolam with the intent to distribute."

The charge was upped to a special felony designation as Poirier had earlier been convicted of a similar offense in March 2015 while out on bail.

The other charge, possession, stems from Poirier's arrest on Nov. 18 in Rochester for allegedly possessing the same drug.

Both charges also allow for fines totaling $250,000.

The Strafford County grand jury indictments were handed down Jan. 18 and released on Wednesday.

An indictment is not an indication of guilt, only that enough evidence has been gathered to move forward to trial.
