LEBANON - Lebanon's elected road commissioner unexpectedly resigned last month.

Selectmen Chair Chip Harlow said on Thursday that Tom Torno, who was re-elected to a three-year term in a tight contest in May 2016, tendered his resignation sometime during the week of May 21.

Tom Torno first became acting road commissioner after his dad, Larry Torno, died of cancer in February 2015.

Larry Torno had served as road commissioner for five years.

Tom Torno's earnings from the town shrank in the past two years as he was not allowed to contract his own truck for town work, which left him with only his $32,000 annual salary.

Harlow said the change was made after it was determined that a road commissioner contracting his own truck was a violation of the town's personnel and ethics policy.

The change came in 2016, he said, before he was elected.

Tom Torno did not return several calls requesting comment from The Rochester Voice.

As a result of Torno's resignation, the town is now looking for a road "foreman" to take on the responsibilities until another election is held next year. The position would start on July 1 and run till the end of the fiscal year next June.
