ARUNDEL, Maine - An Arundel man has been arrested in the stabbing death of a family dog.

Jacob Belanger, 23, of 714 Alfred Road, has been charged with aggravated cruelty to animals.

York County Sheriff's Office deputies say they responded to a call around 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday for a report that somebody had stabbed a dog.

Upon arrival, deputies learned that Belanger had fatally stabbed his mother's chocolate Lab, Annabel.

Belanger lived at the residence with his mother and grandmother and was not at the residence when deputies arrived.

While deputies were conducting their preliminary investigation, Belanger returned home and was arrested for aggravated cruelty to animals, a Class C felony.

There are numerous dogs in the Belanger household and surrounding property, and according to Belanger's mother, he was upset with the number of dogs in the house and he was especially upset at the "large" dogs.

Prior to leaving for work that day, Belanger threatened to kill the dogs if they were still around when he returned, a YCSO press release said.

Belanger is being held at the York County Jail with a bail of $1,000 pending a video arraignment today.
