ROCHESTER - A Rollinsford man said to have fled the scene after bumping into a parked vehicle in a Beaudoin Court driveway was arrested for drunken driving at a nearby Cumberland Farms soon after the accident.

Police got involved when a Beaudoin Court resident called dispatch around 4:10 p.m. to report that a man had used his driveway to turn around and had hit his car.

The reporting party, who said there was little damage done to his own vehicle, said when the man went back to his truck to get his insurance papers he instead took off.

Officers located the man's pickup soon after at the Cumberland Farms on Knight Street where Michael J. Poplawski, 49, of Oak Street, Rollinsford, was given a field sobriety test and arrested for DWI.

During the arrest, Poplawski refused to be handcuffed and resisted by locking his hands to his chest, police say. He also had an open container of alcohol in his vehicle. The simple assault was for allegedly grabbing the hand of a clerk at Cumberland Farms. No injury was reported in the assault.

Poplawski was charged with driving under the influence, resisting arrest, open container and simple assault.

He was released on personal recognizance bail pending an arraignment next month.
