ROCHESTER - A man who stabbed a Rochester teenager as he slept in his bed early today is now in custody after police caught up with him this morning after he sought refuge at his mom’s residence on Silver Street.

The bizarre incident began when police got a call around 2 a.m. from a 19-year-old male who lives on First Street who told police he awoke to find the man stabbing him as he lay in bed. The victim, who knew his attacker, was able to fend off some of the attack but sustained cuts and puncture wounds to the neck, arms, torso and legs.

The suspect then fled the home, which drew a State Police K9 unit which was unable to pick up the track.

The suspect was identified by the victim as Lashate Daniel Word, a 20-year-old transient.

Later around 6 a.m. police responded to the area of 12 Silver St., Apt. A, for report of an unwanted subject. The caller was the mother of Word and stated that her son was acting out of control, a Rochester Police press release stated. Word fled the scene before officers arrived, but was soon located on Winter Street where he was taken into custody.

Word faces a laundry list of charges connected to the incident including felony first degree assault, and several misdemeanors including criminal threatening, resisting arrest and criminal mischief. He was held on no bail and will be arraigned today.

The victim, meanwhile, was transported to Frisbie Memorial Hospital with what were described as nonlife-threatening injuries.
