A web camera on York, Maine's, Mount Agamenticus captured the image of an apparent meteorite traveling across the New Hampshire and Maine night sky early Tuesday evening.

The image from the camera atop York County's highest peak shows the fireball passing by at 5:52 p.m.

A meteorite is a solid piece of debris from an object, such as a comet, asteroid, or meteoroid, that originates in outer space and survives its passage through the atmosphere to reach the surface of a planet.

No estimates on the meteorite's size, its directional coordinates or where it may have landed were immediately available.

The fireball was seen in Maine, Massachusetts and as far away as Montreal.
The National Weather Service in Gray, Maine, urged those who saw the fireball to contact the American Meteor Society.
