Milford High wins statewide 'We the People' championship

CONCORD - Milford High School took first place in the "We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution" state championship held at the City Wide Community Center on Jan. 10.

Students from Hollis-Brookline High School, John Stark Regional High School (Weare, NH) also participated in this annual event, which comprises simulated congressional hearings where students "testify" before a panel of judges acting as members of Congress.

The participating students have an opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of Constitutional law principles while evaluating, taking, and defending positions on a number of relevant historical and contemporary issues.

After a full day of testimonies, the Milford High team, under the direction of adviser Thomas Lundstedt, was awarded first place. This team comprised the following students: Carla Costas, Caleb Cote, Riley Weis, Logan Woods, Ryann Anderson, Allison Demmons, Sofia Freeman, Cameron Hopkins, Lily Kincaid, and Manya Ziemiecki.

Second place was awarded to Hollis-Brookline High School, under the direction of Mr. Trevor Duval. Participating students from this school are Michael Baure, Grover Farwell, Kathryn "Katie" Hersey, John Kotelly, Michael Lanzone, Robinson "RJ" McAdams, Helene McNabb, Constance Mulligan, Lauren Rogers, Emily Turnbull, Paul Vachon, Dylan Brown, Maggie Crooks, Aidan Dufoe, Emily Fox, Tais Morel, Amy Pattelena, Amy Ryherd, Jonah Sacks, Emily Sartell, Daniel Sattler, and Sophia Walle.

Third place was awarded to John Stark Regional High School, under the direction of Mr. Daniel Marcus. Participating students from this school are: Lauren Ballou, Jackson Davis, Ruby Dykstra, Quentin Fairo, Aubrey Fischer, Sarah Guillemette, Quince Kirtland, Rose Kosciuszek, Madison Lafleur, Lydia Richman, and Samantha Veilleux.

"It is inspiring to see high school students applying constitutional principles, exhibiting understanding and the ability to opine on issues facing our democracy today. I always leave these We the People events having a renewed faith in the next generation of citizens." said Jennifer A. Eber, Chair, New Hampshire Bar Association Law Related Education Committee.
Milford High will represent New Hampshire at the "We the People" National Finals, which will be held virtually on April 22-26, 2022.
