Milton Fire chief: Lawyers vetting $2G surcharge

Milton Fire Chief Nick Marique

MILTON - Milton Fire Chief Nick Marique said on Friday the proposal to charge Lebanon $2,000 for every Lebanon rescue call in which Milton is the sole responder has been forwarded for legal review and will be discussed and likely acted on at the town's next Board of Selectmen's meeting on Dec. 1.

Marique said the proposal was discussed in a regularly scheduled selectmen's meeting earlier this week in executive session which precluded him from commenting on it.

He said currently Lebanon accounts for about 5 percent of Milton ambulance calls.

He added that he was onboard with the general concept of the proposal, but it was up to selectmen to make the final decision.

Frisbie Hospital and North Berwick Rescue, the other two entities said to be set to implement the $2,000 surcharge on Dec. 1, were not immediately available for comment today.

The Sanford City Council voted 6-0 on Tuesday to move forward with the surcharge.

Meanwhile, a petition for a revote of the ambulance question that gave up Rescue 2 making Lebanon more dependent on surrounding towns for ambulance services is circulating in Lebanon today and tomorrow.
