ALFRED, Maine - A Milton woman has been indicted in a jewelry theft from a residence in South Berwick earlier this year.

Deanna Cook, 27, of 111 Highland Park, is accused of stealing seven items of jewelry from a residence on Emerys Bridge Road on March 18, South Berwick Police Chief Dana Lajoie said today.

The victim was an acquaintance, Lajoie said, adding items taken included a class ring, bracelets and a gold and sapphire ring.

Some of the items were recovered, while the whereabouts of others cannot be determined, Lajoie said.

The total value of the items taken was $1,600-$1,700.

A warrant for Cook's arrest was issued on July 5, and she was picked up shortly thereafter.

She faces up to five years in jail if convicted.

The November grand jury indictments were handed down and released last week.

An indictment is merely an accusation, and a defendant is presumed innocent unless proved guilty in a court of law.
