New Hampshire is the fourth-cheapest state in the country for car ownership, according to a recent study from insurance.com, which used gas, insurance, maintenance, registration, and sales tax over a five-year period to determine its conclusions.

Granite Staters' five-year cost was $17,988, while the least expensive state was Hawaii at $17,289.

"Hawaii benefits from low average insurance costs and low sales tax," explains Jacqueline Leppla, editor for Insurance.com. "Low average number of miles driven per year leads to very low gas expenditures - all combining to put make the state the least expensive to own a car."

The most expensive state to own a car is Wyoming, with a five-year cost of $31,587.

Maine ranked 10 states below Hawaii at $20,432.
