ROCHESTER - An Ossipee woman was seriously injured Saturday morning when her car went off the side of the Spaulding Turnpike and hit an overhead traffic sign stanchion.

State Troopers responded to the accident scene off the southbound lane between exits 12 and 13 around 6:50 a.m.

The vehicle, a 2007 Kia Sorento, was located off the road up against one of the support beams of the overhead traffic signs.

The operator, Christy Marcoux, 35, sustained serious injuries and was flown to Maine Med in Portland by Lifeflight of Maine.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

As a precaution the state Department of Transportation was contacted to respond and check the integrity of the traffic sign support beam.

The right travel lane was closed for about 45 minutes, however traffic was not impacted.
