ROCHESTER - A fire on Ela Court on Saturday left nine homeless.

The blaze broke out at in a rear apartment behind 7 Ela Court around 6 p.m. with heavy smoke pouring out, said a neighbor who didn't want to be identified for this story.

Several Rochester fire trucks responded to the blaze. It was reported that mutual aid from nearby towns was also summoned.

No injuries were reported, but one dog and a rabbit were said to have died in the blaze.

Due to the amount of smoke that the fire produced throughout the rambling apartment house, the entire structure was deemed uninhabitable.

The Red Cross reported it was providing temporary assistance to four adults and five children.

The building houses four apartments, but The Rochester Voice wasn't able to confirm how many of the apartments were occupied or may have been vacant.

Fire crews cleared the scene around 10 p.m., the neighbor said.

Rochester Fire said they would have no information on the blaze or the cause of the fire until Monday.
