MILTON - A large contingent of Milton and State Police remain at the site of an officer-involved shooting that occurred Wednesday night on Elm Street in Milton.

The Attorney Generals Office and State Police Major Crimes Unit are heading up the investigation

The incident reportedly occurred on Elm Street as members of the Farmington Police Department were dispatched via mutual aid to an address where they encountered an adult male barricaded inside his car armed with what appeared to be a handgun, according to a release sent out from the Dept. of Safety early today.

During the officers' interaction with the male, gunshots were fired and the adult male was injured, according to the release. He was transported to a hospital where he is currently receiving medical attention.

This morning around 5 a.m. about eight to 10 police vehicles were still at the site of the shooting. Police have not yet released the full address where the shooting occurred, but much of the police activity was in the area of the corner of Elm and School streets. Elm Street was blocked off to thru traffic, and this reporter was told to go back to Dawson Street when he approached the yellow police tape.

One nearby resident told The Rochester Voice that multiple gunshots woke him up around 9:30 p.m.

"It was one right after another, so it was either an semi-automatic or different people shooting at the same time," he said.

The man said he first thought the shots might be fireworks, but when a couple of minutes later he saw the ambulance going up the road, he realized it was most likely a shooting.

"It was a lot of excitement," he said, "but we don't need that excitement up here."

Later around 11 a.m. The Rochester Voice noticed what appeared to be a state police officer taking a long look inside a white truck that was parked on a lawn near the intersection of Elm and School streets.

The following roads are closed while emergency personnel continue to process the scene:
-Elm Street at Route 75
-Elm Street at Dawson
-School Street at Steeple Street
Police are asking motorists to avoid the area until further notice.
It has also been confirmed that both Milton Elementary School and Nute Junior/Senior High School will be closed today.
Further updates will be provided as they become available.

Police say there is no known threat to the public at this time.
