Officer wounded, gunman killed during Ashland traffic stop

CONCORD - An investigation is under way in an officer-involved shooting that occurred Monday night in Ashland during a police motor vehicle traffic stop on Main Street. During the traffic stop an adult male produced a gun and engaged in an exchange of gunfire with the officers, according to police. The male shot and wounded one of the officers during the incident.uring the exchange. The adult male was also shot and later died. The Ashland Police Department officer who was struck and wounded is currently being treated for a gunshot injury in an area hospital, but no other law enforcement officers or private citizens were physically injured during the incident. Pursuant to protocol, the names of the officers involved in the exchange of gunfire are being withheld pending the conclusion of formal interviews, and the name of the adult male will be released following notification of next of kin and the completion of an autopsy by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. Investigators are currently assessing if any officers had police body cameras or cruiser camera footage of any portion of this incident. It is expected that additional information will be released after the autopsy. The exact circumstances surrounding this incident are now under active investigation.
