ALTON - Police say an 11-year-old boy has been taken into custody following a shooting early Friday that claimed the life of an Alton woman and left an adult male in critical condition at a Portsmouth hospital.

The attorney generals office announced late Friday that the incident unfolded around 7:30 a.m. when a 911 call was received reporting a shooting at 76 Dobbins Way.

Officers from the Alton Police Department responded to the residence where they found Lizette Eckert, 50, dead as a result of gunshot wound. An autopsy is scheduled for today.

Also found on scene was James Eckert, 48, who had suffered more than one gunshot wound. James Eckert was taken to Portsmouth Regional Hospital where he was listed in critical condition. His condition today was not immediately available.

Meanwhile, a male juvenile was taken into custody around 9:30 a.m. after a search of the surrounding area. He has been charged under juvenile laws with one count of second-degree murder and one count of attempted murder.

Because he is a juvenile, the law prohibits additional information from being released.

The area where the shooting occurred is near the New Durham line.

A supervisor at Portsmouth Regional Hospital today said they were under orders to release no information regarding the victim and referred all media to the attorney generals office, which was unavailable for comment.
