WELLS, Maine - A Massachusetts man was injured and arrested for drunken driving early today after his BMW crashed into a Wells Police cruiser where police officers including State Police were conferring on his whereabouts.
The incident began around 2:30 a.m. when State Police received reports of an erratic operator, southbound on I-95 from Kennebunk.
State Police Trooper Kristy Libritz began to respond from mile 7 in York and requested Wells Police also respond to the incident.
Libritz made it to the mile 16.5 crossover where she met with the Wells Police officers who were inside the cruiser, according to a press release from Maine State Police spokesman Stephen McCausland.
Both police vehicles were being updated with the location of the erratic vehicle by a tractor trailer driver following the car.
As the erratic vehicle approached both police units it suddenly veered into the median crossover and crashed into the Wells cruiser, causing it to overturn. It landed in the passing lane on the northbound side of I-95.
The two Wells officers, Dylan McNally, 21, and Thomas Kinney, 27, were treated at the scene for minor injuries.
The operator of the erratic vehicle, a 2006 BMW, was Anthony Menici, 33, of Charlestown. He was transported to Southern Maine Medical Center for treatment of a number of injuries.
Menici was charged with OUI, driving to endanger and possession of Suboxone.
Both the BMW and the Wells cruiser, a 2013 Dodge Charger, were demolished.
