ROCHESTER - A Rochester man was arrested on Saturday after police say he left his 2-year-old son alone in a locked while shopping at Walmart.

Police got a call for a child locked in a vehicle and arrived to find the toddler inside the vehicle.

The officer managed to remove a bungee cord that was holding the passenger door closed and removed the crying child from the vehicle.

A brief investigation revealed that Leo Ellis, 35, of Rochester, had his 2-year-old son for the weekend and drove to Walmart where he parked. He left the child in the vehicle alone for about 40 minutes while shopping, police say.

After his return from the store with merchandise Ellis was subsequently arrested for endangering the welfare of a child.

While at the scene, his son was placed in the custody of his biological mother, who is not married to Ellis and who resides elsewhere.

Ellis was released on $5,000 personal recognizance.
