Red Cross urging public to call for their free smoke detectors

Over the next two weekends, American Red Cross volunteers and partners will visit local homes to help install free smoke alarms during a national effort to the Sound the Alarm against home fires. The home fire safety and smoke alarm installation events below are part of a two-week push of Sound the Alarm events in 100 cities with a high risk of home fires--which kill more people in a typical year in the U.S than all other natural disasters combined. Most deaths occur in homes without working smoke alarms.

  • Saturday, April 27, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Barre, Vermont
Barre Municipal Auditorium, 16 Auditorium Hill, Barre, VT 05641
  • Saturday, May 4, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Keene, New Hampshire
Keene High School, 43 Arch Street, Keene, NH 03431

"Each day, Red Cross volunteers care for neighbors devastated by home fires, and we want to prevent needless tragedies from these disasters," said Maria Devlin, CEO of American Red Cross New Hampshire and Vermont Region. "You can help #EndHomeFires by volunteering and raising donations for lifesaving services."

Here in New Hampshire and Vermont, the Red Cross has installed more than 4,000 smoke alarms, and helped more than 1,000 families create an escape plan.
