DOVER - A Rochester man has been indicted in the strangulation assault of a woman in June.

John Howard Davis, 40, of 336 Portland St., allegedly put his foot to the woman's throat or neck area, "causing her to experience impeded breathing," one indictment notes. Another alleges the victim suffered the same difficulty breathing when he used his arm to put her in a chokehold.

Both indictments charge Davis with second degree assault, a Class B felony that carries a maximum seven-year sentence and $4,000 fine.

Both attacks took place on June 1 in Rochester.

The Strafford County grand jury indictments were handed down Aug. 18 and released last week.

An indictment is not an indication of guilt, only that enough evidence has been presented to warrant a trial.
